This course emphasizes the development of language arts skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and the understanding and appreciation of literature.  Special attention is given to improve students’ writing abilities.

Skills Taught:

Students will be able to:

• Recognize and use various sentence patterns, phrases, and clauses

• Develop multi-paragraph papers using the writing process

• Construct a well-structured narrative or logical argument in a persuasive paper

• Use details, illustrations, statistics, comparisons, and analogies to support purpose

• Develop research skills as recommended by the M.L.A. (Modern Language Association)

• Demonstrate an understanding of literary techniques and elements used in different genres

Prerequisite(s) ➾ English 9 and Sophomore status or above

This course emphasizes the continued development of language arts skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and the enhanced understanding appreciation of literature.  Continued attention is given to improve student’s writing abilities as means to refining critical thinking and communication skills.  Research techniques are further taught.

Students will be able to:

• Develop research skills as recommended by the M.L.A. (Modern Language Association)

• Write in various forms

• Read literature as an enjoyable activity as well as interpreting literature beyond the literal level

• Respond to literary material through composition

• Become familiar with speaking techniques and gain confidence and skill in speaking before the class

• Continue perfecting use of sentence patterns, phrases, and clauses

Prerequisite(s) ➾ English 10 and Junior status or above

The course is based on a chronological study of the literature of the United States of America.  Literary trends and themes will be explored.

Students will be able to:

• Continue refinement of expression of thought and organization in composition development through various types of writing

• Continue refinement of expression of though and organization in speaking  activities

• Become aware of and utilize critical thinking skills

• Critique relationships among purpose, audience, and content or presentations

• Choose the purpose of the presentation: to defend a position, to entertain and audience, or to explain information

Prerequisite(s) ➾ English 11 and Senior status

Emphasis is placed on the continued development of language art skills (speaking, reading, and writing).  The course is based on a chronological study of the literature of Britain and early British civilizations.  Literary trends and themes will be explored.

Kills Taught:

Students will be able to:

• Read a variety of British literary selections

• Relate experiences gained through literature to one’s own experience

• Organize and express ideas, opinions, and emotions through a series written assignments, including formal literary analysis and essays

• Refine basic English skills for the use in the collegiate or vocational future

• Apply the procedure and structure of a research paper using M.L.A. (Modern Language Association) guidelines to research efficiently and thoroughly

• Practice and perfect different formats of speaking (informative, demonstration, informal, and persuasive)

• Critique effectiveness of presentations
