Prerequisite(s) ➾ Freshman status or above

Students in band will receive instruction in the basics of instrumental performance.  They [the students] will improve their abilities technically and musically on their major instrument.  Time will be spent on music theory and reading skills required to perform within an ensemble.  A part of the course content includes public performance, which may include concerts, festivals, and small ensemble.

Skills Taught:

Students will be able to:

  • Develop fundamental skills necessary to perform on their instrument

  • Develop their music reading abilities

  • Develop the skills required to preform in a group

  • Develop music theory skills required to perform on the instrument

  • Develop music appreciation and understating through the study and performance of the best in music

  • Develop interested and discriminating listeners

Guitar

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Oen guitar and Freshman status or above

This is a self-taught course to learn to play guitar.  The student will of at his/her own pace and learn basic guitar techniques through more advanced techniques.  Students will be tested on skills and basic note reading.  The goal of the class is to be able to buy a pop book of contemporary songs and be able to play the songs, accompanying oneself on guitar.

Students will be able to:

  • Develop basic understanding of the different parts of the guitar

  • Develop a basic understanding of reading music

  • Develop the skill to play basic chords

  • Develop the skill to play more advanced shores

  • Develop the skill to play barred chords

  • Develop the skill to play using the capo ad transposing chords

  • Develop the skill to play individual notes

  • Develop the skill to play using the whole fingerboard of the guitar
