Earth Sciences

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Freshman status or above

In this program, students will acquire a clear understanding and mastery of key Earth Science concepts and ideas.  The students will be introduced to five (5) major areas of study in Earth Science:  Astronomy, Meteorology, Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science.  The overall goal is to allow the students to foster a growing appreciation of and interest in Earth Science.

Skills Taught:

Students will be able to:

  • Have mastery of the key Earth Science concepts of the five (5) major areas of study

  • Strengthen their basic investigative skills through scientific inquiry

  • Mastery of laboratory safety skills

  • Uses models to investigate problems and/or questions

  • Develop a proficiency in critical and creative thinking and problem solving

  • Write a basic lab report

Biology

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Earth Science

In this program, students will acquire a clear understanding and mastery of key biological concepts and ideas.  The students will study ecology, the cell and its process, genetics, history of biological concepts, and all organisms trough their biological classification.  The overall goal is to allow the the student to foster a growing appreciation of an interest in Biology.

  • Have mastery of the key biological concepts and ideas

  • Develop and understanding of the chemical basis of life, the cell, and its process

  • Show a mastery of ecological concepts and principles

  • Demonstrate an understanding of taxonomy

  • Strengthen their basic investigative skills through scientific inquiry

  • Mastery of laboratory safety skills

  • Develop a proficiency in critical and creative thinking and problem solving

  • Expand on their ability to write a complete lab repor

Chemistry

 1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Algebra I (C or better)

Students will learn basic Chemistry, how it is to our world, and how to think like a chemist.  this course includes such topics as scientific measurement, atomic structure, chemical formulas and compounds, physical states of matter, acids and basses, solutions, nuclear chemistry, and organic chemistry.

  • Understand the concepts of chemistry

  • Correlate interaction of experiments and ideas

  • Demonstrate an understanding of laboratory procedures and techniques used by chemists

  • Write a complete laboratory report

  • Strengthen their basic investigative skills through scientific inquiry

  • Develop a proficiency in critical and creative thinking and problem solving

Physics

1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Geometry and Algebra II (can be currently enrolled, Chemistry, and Junior status or above

Students will be introduced to the principles of Physics, which involve the relationships between matter and energy.  The course includes such topics as mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and atomic structure.

Students will be able to:

  • Apply mathematics to physical problems

  • Demonstrate an understanding of laboratory procedures and techniques used to make measurements

  • Develop an understanding of physics concepts to other sciences and in life

  • Develop a mastery of problem solving and critical and creative thinking

  • Write a complete laboratory report

Anatomy and Physiology

1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Biology, Chemistry, and Junior status or above

Students will be introduced to human anatomy and physiology, with emphasis on the systems of the body and how they are interrelated.  The areas covered will include medical terminology, basic chemistry, cell and tissue structure, and the eleven (11) systems of the human body (integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive).  Laboratory work will be required, including a comparative anatomy dissection lab using fetal pigs.

Zoology

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Biology, Chemistry, and Junior status or above

Students will be introduced to the basic principles of zoology.  The students will acquire a clear understanding of the diversity of animal life and the adaptions that allow them in innumerable niches.
