Health Enhancement I

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Freshman status or above

The Health Enhancement course is designed to include team and individual sports, as well as a comprehensive health curriculum.  In the activity courses rulers, techniques, sportsmanship, and physical fitness are the primary goals.  In health, lifestyles and personal evaluation, knowledge attainment and synthesis, decision-making skills, and goal setting are the objectives.  Students are expected to attend all classes and participate actively with the course goals in mind.  The emphasis will be on skill development of sports and activities that offer carry-over value for an active life.  Volleyball, badminton, basketball, bowling, roller-skating, soccer, Frisbee, and tennis are just some of the activities that may be offered in this course.  Applying training principles to the health and skill related fitness components (muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, cardio-respiratory, agility, speed, power, and using beginning training methods).  The course includes basic nutritional concepts for persons in training, use and care of training equipment, planning exercise programs, exercise and the consumer, and other wellness concepts.  Provides the opportunity to rehabilitate injuries.

Skills Taught:

Students will be able to:

  • Become familiar with the concept of wellness and work to maintain an optimum level of wellness

  • Apply the principles of exercise and fitness in regard to personal abilities and limitations

  • Become familiar with skills and abilities necessary in maintaing and improving individual levels of strength, flexibility, endurance, and neuromuscular coordination

  • Become familiar with fitness components and training principles

  • Learn aerobic and anaerobic effects of exercise on the body

  • Develop an exercise-program (learn types of exercise programs, equipment needed, and care)

  • Discuss weight control, weight loss, and weight gain

  • Understand nutrition for athletes

  • Understand stress management

  • Understand injury prevention and treatment (disease prevention related to exercise)

  • Become familiar with use of skills and activities

  • Recognize proper equipment use

  • Discuss and practice appropriate decision-making skills and factors involved

  • Become aware of safety and first aid procedures

  • Be actively involved in movement and recreational activities

  • To become familiar with skills and abilities necessary for lifetime sports

  • Recognize proper equipment use

  • Develop an interest in healthful leisure time activities

  • Have fun participating in physical activities
